Dave Latham Dave and Pamela Latham in happier times

David Edward Latham or as he was known to everybody “Dave Latham” passed away peacefully on 5th July 2023 aged 73, far too young.
He never fully recovered from sustaining a stroke at home while celebrating his 70th birthday.
He is married to Pamela and with 2 sons each from their earlier marriages Dave and Pamela had a long and loving marriage together.

I first met Dave probably over 20 years ago through our passion for Real Ale. Over the years we developed a close friendship, and we enjoyed each other’s company whenever we met.
Dave Worked as a mechanic maintaining the machines at Askam K shoes factory before moving to Glaxo in Ulverston for a number of years until he took early retirement

His passions outside work in no particular order were:

  • Caravans - Pam and Dave were very keen “Caravaners” and were members of the Camping and Caravan Club and often away at one of their “rallies”. They ran aa successful annual Camping and Caravan Club event at Coniston.
  • Love of Real Ale -Dave took up a number of roles within our local Furness CAMRA branch:
    • Brewery Liaison Officer for Foxfield, Coniston and Cumbrian Legendary breweries over the years
    • Social Secretary - He and Pam combined to make a great “secretary” at our branch meetings
    • Major volunteer at our Ulverston Beer Festivals over the years
    • Dave loved his visits to the Manchester Beer Festival, especially when it was held at the Velodrome where we had the pleasure of seeing the Great British cycling squad training. Amazing watching Olympic gold medallist Laura Trott race past while we were drinking lovely beer.
    • CAMRA AGM 2011 in Sheffield. Dave and I went to sample an AGM, my 2nd, Dave’s first. We ended up surprised at how much we enjoyed the ”motion debates”. As much as we loved being in CAMRA, the internal politics of the organisation were not really for us. Also, over the weekend we went on an organised Brewery trip to Thornbridge which Dave thoroughly enjoyed.
    • Great times at <>b>Prince Of Wales Foxfield - Dave had some of the best times of his pub life over the years in the Prince, from just casual visits to Stuart and Lynda’s organised events where on numerous occasions he and Pam would stay over and treat themselves to Stuart’s famous breakfasts.
After retiring he took on Volunteer work which included:
    • An NHS volunteer driver taking patients to and from hospital appointments.
    • Meals on wheels delivery driver - He loved his driving and if he was going to pick you up at any time, he would always be on time. I used to jokingly say – our “Professional Driver” has arrived.
    • Dave had a real love of music, Saturday nights in his house could regularly go on to the wee small hours listening to music with a glass of red. If you ever went around visiting during the day music would invariably be on.
    • In earlier days he ran the London Marathon and I believe had a love of squash
    • Dave also loved cooking and enjoyed watching the cookery programs on TV, his favourites being The Hairy Bikers and Rick Stein. Several years ago, the Manor in Broughton held an annual Pork Pie Competition which Dave won on more than one occasion.
    • It’s hard to imagine anyone who met Dave not having a good word to say about him. He was a true gent, a great friend and will be missed by so many people, One of my best friends and I feel privileged to have met him and enjoyed so many wonderful memories in each other’s company. RIP Dave.
