CGP Buys The Black Cock

Wonderful news that Broughton-based CGP has added The Black Cock in Broughton to their portfolio which also includes the Greyhound in Grizebeck and The Prince of Wales, Foxfield. The Black Cock will be refurbished and will re-open later in the summer while The Prince will take a bit more work as it is currently in a poor state so our guess is that you won't see its return until 2024/5 at least. Better late than never though!

We have cider here?

Yes, we do and what's more, it is award winning. Listen to this:

Broughton Bank Perry and Cider has been awarded the prestigious IWSC GOLD award after only 4 years of commercial cider production, and following a Bronze IWSC award last year. John Hibbert (www.ciderman.co.uk , Instagram @ciderandperryman ) started an organic perry and cider business after planting vintage varieties of apple and pear over 15 years, with the aim of reinvigorating the Lake District cider tradition.

All fruit is picked by hand and the perry and cider is made from pure fresh juice from fresh local fruit with natural fermentation, without any additives such as sulphites. It’s gluten free and vegan too. John supplies Low Sizergh Barn near Kendal, Yew Tree Barn in Newton in Cartmel, local pubs, community events. John also welcomes individuals to purchase perry and cider from his Cider House at Broughton Bank, 1 mile north of Cartmel.

Tasting Note from IWSC, event organisers:

"A focused cider with intense tropical fruit notes running throughout. The nose is ripe and appealing with a clean cantaloupe melon note, leading to a rich, complex palate. Layers of fruit are complimented by hints of tea leaf and camomile, ending on a lip-smacking finish."

Well, there you are - best see if you can find it as it is well worth the effort.
